Watercolor Painting Classes in Sonoma County, CA
Watercolor Fundamentals Part 1
This class focuses on the simple delight of mixing color with water, brushing it on paper, and watching what happens as it moves and dries. You will learn easy ways to create paintings that are all about color and the sometimes unpredictable nature of water.
No drawing skills are needed.
In this class we will explore the basic principles of watercolor painting. Learn or refresh your understanding of brush handling, brush care and setting up, the benefits of “good paper”, watercolor lights and darks, flat and graded washes, wet-on-wet techniques such as charging, wet-on-dry techniques such as glazing, color wheel, color theory, color mixing, and more. Simple applications of these techniques invite you to experiment and play.

Watercolor Fundamentals Part 2
This next series will build on what we learned in Part 1, quickly refreshing some techniques and then applying them in our paintings. We will create more complex landscape paintings, skies and seascapes; wet-into-wet and wet-into-dry nature studies in a few different ways, and we will venture further into painting from our imaginations. We will explore abstraction and non-representational styles, where we don't look at something and try to paint it, but instead work intuitively with colors and shapes and let the paintings emerge and evolve from there. You don't have to know where you're going, enjoy the journey and see where it takes you!

Watercolor Fundamentals Part 3
You’ve experienced Part 1, you’ve experienced Part 2, and now let’s dive into more water in Part 3! More water leads to more spontaneity and deepens our focus in the moment. Loose florals, imagined landscapes, and abstractions are painted wet-into-wet style in multiple layers. Refining our abilities to work with the water keeps us open to possibilities and surprises in our paintings as they emerge.

Anne Millett is a watercolor painter and teacher in Sonoma County, California.
After completing the core program at Boston University School of Visual Arts, she earned a BFA in Art History from UC Berkeley. A maker at heart, she became a silk dyer (developing original colors for dying and painting silk), which led her to sewing. She created an award-winning stationery company, which she named Mira Aster, sewing fabrics and other beautiful things to paper. Her designs were sold in museum shops and fabulous stores across the US and in Europe. Her work was featured in many magazines such as Martha Stewart Weddings, Town & Country, New York Magazine, and Elle Decor. Her work is included in the Permanent Collection of Contemporary Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
In the high-end event industry she honed her skills in graphic design, calligraphy, sign painting, and floral design. After many years in the client-focused, commercial art world she transitioned to watercolor painting, intuitive painting, and teaching calligraphy in the Copperplate style.
She is inspired by teaching intuitive painting to children, guiding and encouraging them to confidently tap into their own creative sources.
Watercolor painting is her favorite way to experience the feeling of “no time”, and sharing it with others by way of teaching is a dream come true. She hopes everyone will (re)discover the joy of painting, exchanging ideas of expectation and judgement with feelings of wonder and surprise. Anne is known for her generous and passionate teaching style. When you meet her you will see how much she loves painting.
Anne is available to teach private classes for groups or individuals, and she is always happy to learn about new teaching opportunities at exciting venues for creativity. Please email enquiries to classes@miraaster.com
